Save the Date: March 5, 2011, 9AM – 1PM Albany Addresses Bullying: Creating a Community of Respect

Albany Unified School District is putting on a half-day summit on March 5, 2011 to explore and address bullying. AUSD looks forward to pulling together teenage students, parents, community members, and educators to explore the scope and definition of bullying. There will also be an elementary track for elementary students and their parent(s) put on by Kidpower. During this summit, all participants will have the opportunity to learn some new tools with which to address bullying, whether it be on an institutional, familial, or interpersonal level. We will have two keynotes, one on Non-Violent Communication with Miki Kashtan and one on Cyber-Bullying with Steve Dewarns as well as a wide range of interesting and informative break-out sessions. Through this summit, we hope to further the work of creating a community of in which our young people feel safe, so they may thrive socially, psychologically and academically.

On November 30, 2010, the Third District Court of Appeal issued a ruling in the case of Doe v. Albany Unified School District. Doe v. Albany Unified School District is a lawsuit challenging the District's application of a statute regarding the number of physical education instructional minutes that are to be provided to elementary students over a specified period of time.

Albany High School Aquatic Center Construction Update

The new Albany pool/classroom complex is scheduled to open in summer 2011. The historic Albany Pool was demolished in July 2009, as scheduled; asbestos and lead were removed from the pool site in June 2009. Pool construction began in fall 2010, following review and approval by the Department of the State Architect (DSA).

Principals and PTA Presidents’ Task Force Meeting Update

The issue of equity in enrichment programs among the three Albany elementary schools has been a recent topic at the AUSD Board meetings, as well as in our communities. In an effort to work together to ensure consistent, high quality enrichment programs for all elementary schools in the district, a Task Force consisting of AUSD Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Lynda Hornada, and the Cornell, Marin and Ocean View Schools Principals and PTA Presidents has been formed.

Enrollment Changes in Albany Unified School District

Due to lower than expected enrollment in Kindergarten and 1st grade and higher enrollment than expected in 4th and 6th grades, the District is making adjustment to bring our class size ratios into line with contractual obligations and our approved 2010-11 budget.
