In the wake of the San Bernadino shootings and the bomb threats in Los Angeles & New York, this is a good time to review the Crisis Communication Plan we have in place. The plan includes both internal and external communication protocols.
Internal communication follows the Concentric Circles Communication model that disseminates information in a coordinated manner to Board members, district leadership team, bargaining unit reps, and community stakeholders.
The external communication follows the Emergency Communication Process that disseminates information to parents, students, and staff and community stakeholders utilizing the Intouch Robocol System (phone & email), AUSD website, Facebook page, & Twitter. Both models have been widely communicated and used in recent situations where the need for urgent communication was necessary. Board Members, District leaders, parents, students, staff, and community stakeholders are familiar with these processes.
At the district level, we have an Emergency Communication quick link on website outlining our communication protocols. At the city level, we continue to build upon our strong relationship with Albany Police Department and are keeping lines of communication open on this issue with Chief McQuiston. We are committed to continuing our close relationship with his office to ensure the safety of our schools. At the county level, the Alameda County Office of Education Communication Department is coordinating basic messaging on this issue that we can customize and utilize if needed. At the state level, State Schools Chief Tom Torlakson Issues Statement Regarding LAUSD School Closures.
I will continue to work diligently to familiarize parents, students, staff, and community stakeholders with our internal and external communication protocols.
As always, feedback is welcome.
