AHS EDSET Students create “Radiolab-style” podcasts

AHS EDSET seniors created podcasts as part of their second quarter projects. They were tasked with constructing a 10-15 minute Radiolab-style podcast from the ground up.  Students started with a self-driven question, and then followed an arduous process of researching, interviewing, scripting, recording and editing. Other students were able to listen to the podcasts and make comments via SOUNDCLOUD. Everyone is proud of the work of our EDSET Seniors and their willingness to edit, re-record, rethink, and give genuinely useful critique to each other’s work.

This project is a result of interdisciplinary collaboration between the senior-year EDSET teachers, Mariflo Hudson, Sara Oremland and Jessica Park. That collaboration could not happen without the additional support from the rest of the school/district. Also, specific thanks to Jeff Castle for graciously letting the EDSET students take over his computer lab in January.  Below are three out of fourteen podcasts.

  1. "Mars Colonization" This podcast asks the question why we should consider this extreme venture, and how feasible it would be to get to and survive on Mars. The two students build a podcast with incredible primary interview footage from a JPL employee on Mars projects and  best-selling author Andy Weir (The Martian), as well as impeccable secondary research.

  1. "The Future of Climate Change Policy" takes current information (as of January) on President Trump's climate policies, and speculates on the future of climate change policies based on the stagnation and contradiction in policies from past governments.

  1. "A Picture Perfect World" asks the question: what is the role of photography in creating social change? How does the work of photojournalists and documentary photographers impact the public? This podcast is notable in its editing, and creation of 'word pictures'
