Concerns & Complaints
Do You Have A Concern?
Albany Unified School District is committed to listening and responding to concerns. We encourage parents, staff, students, and community members to resolve problems proactively and as soon as possible after the concern arises.
If it is a classroom concern, first speak with your child’s teacher. (Please request a time to talk, so that the teacher can give you their full attention.)
If the concern is not resolved, you may speak with the school counselor, assistant principal, or principal. They will want to know when you spoke with the teacher and any steps for resolution that were discussed.
Keeping a log of who you have talked to regarding your concern is helpful. Although we understand that it can be difficult, please try to note the dates and times of any specific incidents.
Once in a while, an issue cannot be resolved at the school level. If you have taken the steps above and still are concerned, please contact a District-level administrator.

We want to work together with you and find that this process is the most efficient way to reach solutions. You have the right at any time to initiate a formal complaint process as outlined by Federal and California State law, including a written statement that is signed and verified under penalty of perjury. These complaints allege a specific violation.

The district shall follow these complaint procedures when addressing complaints alleging unlawful discrimination based on actual or perceived age, sexual orientation, gender, ethnic group identification, race ancestry, national origin, religion, color, mental or physical ability, or on the basis of a person’s association with a person or group with one or more of these actual or perceived characteristics, in any program or activity that receives or benefits from state financial assistance.
Uniform complaint procedures shall also be used when addressing complaints alleging failure to comply with state and/or federal laws in adult education, consolidated categorical aid programs, migrant education, vocational education, child care and development programs, special education programs, and federal school safety planning requirements.

Williams Complaint
California Education Code (EC) Section 35186 created a procedure for the filing of complaints concerning deficiencies related to instructional materials, conditions of facilities that are not maintained in a clean or safe manner or in good repair, and teacher vacancy or misassignment. The complaint and response are public documents as provided by statute. Complaints may be filed anonymously. However, if you wish to receive a response, you must provide contact information.
