Albany High School was spotlighted at the January 26, 2016 Board of Education meeting. Albany High School Dance Team provided an inspiring performance.

yeah  President Roosevelt and trustees at the Albany Unified School District this month we spotlight how many high school we're proud of all of their accomplishments Jeff Anderson principal is here tonight to present to student thank you very much you called me and was explaining to me what Spotlight was and the first thing that came to mind cuz they just gone to the performance on January 7th was to bring these distance from Albany High here because I think it's about connection and one of the things I got from seeing that performance that night over at the Little Theater was a whole lot connected student from Albany High in a program that's been growing over the years and so what would like to do sequence wisest have maybe the board sit in the audience have the kids come in and do performance Carol will talk about our program a little bit and then the kids would like to say a few words to you and that's the sequence will follow and see how it goes but it should be entertaining saying the the spotlights about a connection that you want to make the discuss through out the district is really really important and again thinking about Connections I thought about this group I go into the cafeteria almost every day either during break or lunch for soup and the Dancefloor is in the cafeteria and it always kids in the dancing so it's a very Vivid example of being connected to school by still am an extracurricular activity and I think we can all agree that when we were in school some of us remember more or less what we learned our Academic Program hopefully more than left but we all remember activities like this that we participated in it's something that you never forget and again the most important things that make students feel connected to Albany High School it's very important for them to be successful so it turn it over to care about the students Salem okay that we used to fight about giving PE credit for this there's no exercise at all at all credit I have more flexibility with a schedule so this is my fourth year lot of these seniors have been with me all for years and so they can kind of tell him how it's changed and grown as we've been there as I've been there we started with 35 kids and two dance classes that were mixed in level and then now today we have 75 kids and three level stars dance one there's two for PE credit and then our Advanced dance to so we really have a place for everyone no matter what your ability level no matter if you have a lot of yes or not and what I really love about our program is that we have kids that have a lot of Studio experience than that are interested in Hip Hop some more Bollywood Style K-pop but they learn from each other I had a student this year come up to me and choose jazz dancer Studio trained and she said the faker if you need play The Hip Hop heart you know I can do that if you need me to switch over and I looked at her and I said you would not have said that a year ago because he hadn't been around all the tip up answers in high tried that too there's a lot of cross pollination and they're learning from each other in the things that they bring to the class I think that's really great we do lots of different styles and hope to see them have a little same for everyone  after school we have Albany Dance Company which will be going to their first competition this year that's more of our traditional cut type of dancing they perform football games and rallies and things like that this year and then stomach will talk about it we started up Albany hip hop crew so that's kind of the other organizations attendant brother organ listen to our sister organization even though it's all they're all mixed with anyway they're like we got guys and so they really taking that back really sit around the kids are taken out around with it and have a lot of interest in you coming into that we have that are in are kids better in life skills so we have quite the broad range and everyone's very supportive and it's really awesome to see especially when they come together for their shows so I'll let them talk  Allison hear all your kids all four years so she's going to talk about our progression hi I'm aliani going to senior I think all of my peers and I can agree that the whole like dance cause everything we've really like Excel than like advance in the years but Miss Baker has been here she's like one of us amazing teachers that I've you're personally worked with and I think we can all agree with that right guys yeah  Edinburgh in the first day of school and high school as a freshman I was so nervous and I felt like my friends and I really connected really well and the dance class there was like Miss Baker said so many different levels because when we started freshman year there was no clear like distinction from like beginner classes like ass the class and stuff but it's a really good environment for kids to be with a common like Express themselves and just like have fun you were always being supported by your where is which is like I think one of most important things in high school is to have people around you and stuff like that and I watch all of our old shows a lot and you can tell Ashley the guys like they've improved so much over the like a lot of them have improved so much by having the speaker there it's like the Porta I just think it's a really good program and I hope that after my senior friends and I grow you ate them if they can continue to do it he loves us cuz it's really it's a really good program I really like it  yes thank you this is Madison's relocate on Albany Dance Company and this year we traded positions for student leaders Institute are senior dance Captain for Allegiant  everyone I'm figure that I'm finna dance captain of Albany Dance Company & Company is a really incredible Kennedy we have the ability to compete and perform and do all these insanely amazing things and all for our high school to I think one of my favorite parts of being a part of the company as that for representing something that's really bigger than ourselves we representing the entire School of 1500 people which is a really big deal we perform in front of everyone which is also a huge deal to me personally I mean I love performing then we just we have the ability to be a part of something bigger which is also really important and I think it connects us to our fellow students what is a fantastic young that it's also an opportunity that we wouldn't have otherwise we don't have to pay for the training which is absolutely incredible because dance has an extremely expensive Sport and I know personally I wouldn't be able to receive the training if we didn't have that financial support from our school and the speaker so I think that not only do we read if I can afford this we can also reach that wouldn't normally have the opportunity personally I'm just really proud can you pardon such an incredible group and I'm really proud to be the dance Captain as well thank you do we have Chris and Ronnie are going to come and talk about our hip-hop group find Rowdy bison companies at our school Branch off of ATC ATC focuses mainly on lyrical or contemporary and I'll be hip hop group focuses on surprise hip hop hip hop and we do focus on hip hop how many hip hop Crews for the people who are really interested in learning about the different about learning from each other run organization I'm the president and the vice president and it's being their supervisors we are to please do delete program our own and it's a really incredible experience to be in AC show interest in it was last Thursday and I expected to show up as 12 people showed up do we could only accept we can only accept around 5 people so that's kind of a big deal but anyways it's a really good experience to be able to like Madison set it free to join so it's if anyone want to learn how to do hip hop want to focus on the Hip Hop affected and not just modern or contemporary Macy's the place for that so I'm just going to say a few words of my own see I mean of course it started because mainly we wanted something like a DC and we've actually wanted this for a couple of years now because we always thought that he's had a lot of time to play after school were they had kind of able to just work together a lot closer than when they can in class cuz you know sometimes it just gets hectic and whatnot but beyond that I think it was great just not only cuz we had it finally but I think it was run and it was really up to us to make it reality like in really wasn't a last necessarily where we had the ability to rely on the teacher that if we didn't do anything eventually we could fall back on her like no it was really I thought that even even just for us cuz we had like an amazing time I think my mother died because I don't we give around like you know we put like a heart and soul wow the due in like you really care about what we're doing I think I'm great example of that was when we had our last show and I was going to kind of like you know suffers performance you know I'm kind of nervous about what you might think and the craziest thing happened were middle schoolers would come to the we're taking it on how much they love the AC and how much they wanted to come and I just absolutely amazing all these kids are like so inspired by so if not for I would really just like it for the future kids I come in so they can take anything right now Craigslist Frank and also some a lot of in addition baby outside of school but in class to do a lot of collaboration soon choreography and I think that's just awesome teamwork skills that's and communication do you know working together that you know that you just can't buy that kind of experience so that's another thing that you get out of Dance  my name is Jeremy Ben and I'm here to talk about experience in being together with dance  going to high school pretty much is the Trinity ORD little sample of the real world that you have your social group you have a club got to trans I know I tried bringing bleach clothes back dinner workout  my father once told me there is no experience that can compare to high school experience it's right because when I was a freshman I was a captain of the football JV team  and blew out my knee before the vapors game and it was devastating to come to any social event and it was more devastating to come home every night to be stuck straighten your new bag of frozen peas right on top every morning I will go to physical therapy my trainer has me  what do you want to get out of this and I told her I won't be able to walk again and of course that's why what's going on turn up the time  but as time went by I begin to ponder what else is there for me what else can I do what else can I do to improve men just walking  so it's winter break and I have a friend Chris over playing video games and he tells me hey like that the dance show during the first week of school and hung Vikings totally come I look at him look at video game look me and I look at him and let it go and I'll bring my mom my dad my brother and we're just clumps up Star Theater but cell phone outages Illuminating and then the curtains move music roll and just watching everybody was just something that was beautiful it was something I can true describe just watching just gave me the drive like wow this is what I want is want to want to do it's fine art I will make this a passion I want to go out to dance I want to dance I want to press myself  so the next day if it's good therapy as my trainer that I want change my goal  Auto Liker we don't want to dance like I can't teach you but but let's move on so I'm going to walk and I wasn't a part of dance at the time but my friend Chris had told me that we're accepting outside dance Excel for sure let's do that let's me and you and that cute cool hair and cheesy smile that makes it happen and we came over the trio and it was  again something beautiful and something a little bit these night nothing to like fantastic but just a feeling its toll  what is what happened to Squad to say was it the best thing ever in my entire life and once I was given the opportunity to choose my class and next year I was like time in your dance like I've been choosing dance everything you have been part of class I don't have to say if you are a child going through strollers at home come to Dan express yourself if you're having problems with school come stamps record so this is the opportunity for you to be free to let yourself go and being this year knowing that in May is going to be my last performance drawing and maturing with these people have to think Miss Baker for putting all the details together letting  some skimpy captain on a football team turn into Zilla skimpy Cade but doing something that he loves and being able to police breath and stuff thank you Miss Becker 6 questions 6 - 4 what's happening to you next year please are the second inspiring story exit what what what's happening to you next year what are your plans next year I was asked Ashley to join a college dance for online do that and hopefully be Park competitions and I got to call him not too long ago to be signed for a music label again taking Miss Baker for introducing dance into my life I'll be able to preserve my own music career excellent thank you no but I think the board might have some comments or questions I know you some is it popping up maybe we'll start with Paul we don't have a letter program at this point  we haven't we've done our company and our crew as more of a more like Rhythm or it's not a under the sports umbrella so we haven't pursued that in the angle cuz we haven't gone that we've gone more you know we consider ourselves a little bit and if physical activity so we haven't gone in that direction that's a great. Is that a possibility for the future. There are rules about how they would have to fundraise to do to pay a stipend for me and I would rather them not have to poop well that's something that I know that this is not a board thing but it's a different thing in my big is all the type of sleep aid by the district so you might want to write something up  sounds like you put in a lot of extra hours I just really really forgot to file the student speakers you were so well of course favor Albany kids you're always so Jason articulate in clear but I feel that you are particularly the job of speaking because you're talking about something really really care about and text Willie came across  so with apologies for my scratchy voice everybody for sharing what you did tonight I really wanted to thank you Jeremy for putting yourself out there and just really telling us something about how important this was to you that was just fabulous here and I'm the hip hop club what I really heard from that was dead if you if you don't figure out what you're going to do nobody's can it to you on a plate and I thought that was an important message and then I take Madison you were the one who said that this was so important because it Republic education and not too many people could afford it otherwise so that's a good message for all of us to hear so thank you no one else tagging what Charlie says and and thank you for performing for us my daughter is as a high school senior what's a dancer and I think for her infer for the other dancers there it's it's this place at school that is a refuge at school wall-to-wall science classes and dance and if it wasn't for dance I don't think he'd be anywhere near as comfortable as she is living with the school and being in cool their dance classes is laid out is it away since they have a room for it so there's a dance space and there are sunflower seed butter sandwiches and all the tea you can drink it's a place created as a place for high school kids to distressed relax and and I think she was maybe eight or nine she said you want to go to be an astronaut ballerina really doing it now she's going to go off to school and study time she's going to dance the rest of her life and she got through school and I think it's a wonderful blend of everything we need  Sarah do you have any comment but you know no let's go to the dance the really great program I wish I was stop Flex I'm in the middle of reading the Martian surface  so my comments are you know this is my 13th year in the Albany School with the Albany schools in and been living in Albany for almost 40 years and you know what just reinforces things we can talking about continuously in all my time here that  meeting the needs and and the emissions and and the things that engaged our students in the schools be a dance will be at sports or be at music and think that we've built over those years just makes it kind of creator make it wonderful talented students and talented brings us down to teachers so thank you all opportunity thank you so much you don't have to stay for the rest of the meeting
