District Goals & Objectives 2021-2022

2021-2022 District Goals & Objectives

Approved by Board of Education October 20, 2021

On October 20, the AUSD Board of Education held a workshop to discuss the approved Superintendent Goals & Objectives, review outstanding issues raised by Board members in previous meetings, and agree on priorities for the 2021-22 school year.

The following reflects the Goals and Objectives that will be the focus of the district governance team in 2021-22 and clarifies some specific issues that will be addressed as part of those Objectives. This is not a comprehensive list of the activities to be conducted under each Objective; plans for achieving each objective will be discussed and acted on by the Board throughout the year as appropriate.

Goal 1:  Student Achievement

Provide a comprehensive educational experience with expanded opportunities for engagement, assessment, and academic growth.

Objective 1.1: Attract, hire, train, and retain a highly qualified and diverse certificated staff that reflects the diversity of our student population.

Objective 1.2: Develop and implement a system for using local and state assessment data to inform decisions about resources and practices, specifically related to closing the achievement gaps.

Objective 1.3: Develop a plan for closing the achievement gaps among our targeted groups: students with disabilities, English Language Learners, low-income, Latine and African-American students.

  • Includes Board-identified priorities of math intervention at all grades and a strategic plan for educational technology. Additional issues under this objective will be taken up by the Board-Appointed Student Achievement Committee.

Objective 1.4: Oversee the completion of a Special Education Audit that evaluates district’s fundamental practices and develop effective processes for timely assessments.

Goal 2: Support the Whole Child

We will foster the social and emotional growth of all students, implement an array of strategies to increase student engagement, identify individual social-emotional and behavioral needs, and apply collaborative appropriate interventions through a multi-tiered system of support.

Objective 2.1: Take measurable targeted actions to increase the number of students who have a positive relationship with staff and peers, feel safe, and have expanded their opportunities for involvement at school.

  • This will include the Board-identified priority of examining district support for the arts and continuing to expand student engagement efforts, such as the Student Advocacy Committee.
  • The Board-identified priority of addressing student mental health will be a focus area of the District’s Wellness Committee in 2021-22.

Objective 2.2: Reduce the chances of COVID-19 outbreaks and minimize classroom closures through rigorous testing and tracing.

Goal 3: Communication

All stakeholders will collaborate and communicate about decisions that guide the sites and district, through effective district communications and responsiveness to the concerns and interests expressed by members of the community.

Objective 3.1: Continue to improve quality of communications at all levels (internal staff communications, school site communications, and community outreach). Increase availability of communications in multiple languages (reflecting data on preferred language) and communication methods (email, text, etc.).

Objective 3.2: Increase outreach to and collaboration with stakeholders from historically disenfranchised communities in decision-making processes.

Goal 4: Financial Stability

Provide financial stability through the creation and utilization of a strategic process.

Objective 4.1: Engage in a process that will result in a solvent budget for multiple years (year one and two years after that), as determined and approved by the County Office of Education and the California Department of Education.

  • Includes analysis of enrollment trends for fiscal planning
  • Includes identifying a target goal for long-term fiscal stabilization
  • Includes implementing a process through which the Board guides the district’s budget priorities

Goal 5: Manage Construction Effectively

Ensure that the district’s facility projects are overseen effectively and are successfully utilized.

Objective 5.1: Manage all construction projects to ensure expeditious completion, adherence to budget, attention to stakeholder input, along with holding vendors financially accountable.

Objective 5.2: Continue to transition from construction to effective utilization of new facilities, particularly in regard to reducing environmental impacts.

  • Includes analysis of classroom utilization, and partially updating facilities plan to identify areas of investment needed in the immediate future, such as HVAC in Cornell Elementary.

Objective 5.3: Create and execute a plan with a timeline to move the district office from Berkeley back to Albany.

Additional Goal: Develop an equity framework

The Board discussed how to continue its work of developing and implementing a framework for identifying and addressing equity issues in all areas of school district, including curriculum, professional development, student support, board policies, and budget priorities. A subcommittee of the Board (Trustees Boyd and Hinkley and Student Board Member Lira) will work with the Superintendent to plan the Board’s work on this framework in 2021-22.
