Important Update and Reminder of AUSD Safe Haven Protections

Dear AUSD Families,
I am writing to share an important update and to reaffirm Albany Unified School District’s unwavering commitment to the safety, dignity, and well-being of every student and family in our community.
We have received confirmed reports of federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity in East Oakland and West Oakland. At this time, the activity is not occurring in Albany, nor is it adjacent to any AUSD school sites. While there is no known impact to our district, I want to ensure that our entire community feels informed and supported.
AUSD is a Safe Haven District
Our Board-adopted Safe Haven and Sanctuary policies affirm that all students—regardless of immigration status—are welcome and protected in our schools. We do not ask about or record immigration status. We do not allow ICE agents on any school campus without appropriate review and legal procedures. Our goal is to ensure students continue to learn, grow, and feel secure every day.
AUSD Practices and Protections
AUSD does not:
Allow immigration enforcement agents on campus without verification and review by the Superintendent vetted through legal counsel or designee.
Collect or maintain information about students’ or families’ immigration status.
Permit the release of private student information unless required by law.
AUSD staff will:
Keep school campuses safe, welcoming, and free from intimidation or disruption.
Follow our Safe Haven Protocols if anyone observes concerning activity near any school.
Contact district leadership immediately if immigration enforcement agents request access to a student, staff member, or facility.
Know Your Rights
Every individual—regardless of immigration status—has rights under the law.
Key reminders:
You have the right to remain silent.
You have the right not to open the door unless ICE presents a warrant signed by a judge.
You have the right to refuse to sign documents you do not understand.
Your children have the right to attend school, free from discrimination or intimidation.

What We Ask of Our Community
Stay informed through District updates rather than social media rumors.
Contact your school principal if you have concerns about campus activity.
Reach out for support if you or someone you know is feeling anxious or unsafe; our counselors and family engagement staff are here to help.
Treat one another with compassion, recognizing that uncertainty about immigration enforcement can cause real fear and harm.
Moving Forward
We will continue to monitor the situation in Oakland and the region. I will alert principals, staff, and families if any new information arises that may affect our schools. Albany Unified School District stands firmly with every student and family. We remain committed to being a district where all students are welcomed, protected, and empowered to thrive.
If you have questions or need additional resources, please reach out to your school site leader.
With care and solidarity,![]()
