Bullying, Harassment, & Suicide Prevention Resources

Albany Unified promotes a safe and supportive environment for all students and staff and abhors bullying of any kind. AUSD is dedicated to acting against bullying and is aligned with AB 34, the Safe Place To Learn Act.

The Albany Unified School District Board Policy Manual includes policies regarding suicide prevention, sexual harassment, hate-motivated violence, bullying and discrimination of all types. The Policy Manual can be found here:

BULLYING AND MISTREATMENT

AUSD values a safe and supportive learning environment for all students that promotes student achievement and embraces diversity within our community. 

 

We understand that students are learning how to be kind and in respectful relationships with one another. Students are learning to navigate the social landscape and build corresponding skills. It is our collective responsibility between home and school to support this part of their learning. It is also our job as a school to keep students safe. 

When students mistreat one another, even if it does not rise to the level of, or fit within the definition of bullying, we support all students in learning the needed skills, and to make things as right as possible. This often involves a combination of consequences and restorative processes.

We specifically define bullying as behavior that is:

  1. Deliberate and/or intentional
  2. Repeated over time, and
  3. Involves a real or perceived imbalance of power

There are several forms of bullying, such as verbal, relational aggression, physical and cyberbullying. 

 

As a school community we have no tolerance for any type of bullying. We encourage students to inform a school staff member when they reasonably believe that they are a target of bullying or when they witness someone else being bullied so that it can be addressed in a timely manner.

  • Massachusetts Bullying Prevention and Intervention Resources

    Massachusetts law led to the Model Bullying Prevention and Intervention Plan and implementation of model practices in school staff professional development in bullying prevention.

  • National Center on Safe Supportive Learning Environments (NCSSLE)

    Funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Safe and Healthy Students. Bullying is defined as a form of unwanted, aggressive behavior among school-age children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance and that is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. This site describes physical, verbal, social bullying, and cyberbullying and features resources.

    The site provides a summary of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program developed by the Olweus Group. It is a comprehensive model that defines bullying/cyberbullying and utilizes annual surveys, classroom curriculum, implementation resources, and training.

    Teaching Tolerance is a project of the Southern Poverty Law Center. It includes classroom resources and materials on bullying, cyberbullying, and school climate among many other topics related to tolerance.
