Drugs and Alcohol among Albany High Students: Examining the Trends

At Albany High School, we have become increasingly concerned by the apparent growth in the use of marijuana by our students.  Data from the California Healthy Kids Survey, which is administered every other year in the 9th and 11th grades, indicates quite a jump in marijuana usage at AHS, particularly among 11th graders, and especially when compared to state and national trends.  We are receiving anecdotal evidence of increased usage as well, both during the school day (i.e. off campus at lunch) and after school and weekends.

We suspect that part of the increase in usage is due to the publicity surrounding Proposition 19 and subsequent decriminalization of marijuana use,  which  I might remind people, never was intended to legalize use by minors.  Whatever the reason, we are presenting this information to our community with the hope that it will stimulate conversations within families and among governing bodies such as the PTSA and Department Chair Council and the Leadership class.
