Dear AUSD Community,
Although the horrific situation in Israel and Gaza is a long way away when measured in miles, it has strongly impacted all of us—some of us much more than others. Many members of our community have family and friends in the region. The violence, terrorism, and deaths have been weighing on me since last Saturday. My heart aches for the innocent civilians in both Israel and Gaza who have died or are currently in danger. Internally, AUSD staff have had discussions about how best to support our students and families in need during these very disturbing and troubling times. I am writing this letter now, after having had time to reflect, to let you know how AUSD is handling this.
Here in our school community, we welcome all peoples, all religions, and all cultures. Our Board policies declare and describe how we will maintain safe and inclusive schools for all. And of course, AUSD does not condone violence in any form. In alignment with these principles, our school sites have been identifying students and families that have been directly impacted by this violence.
We will not be teaching lessons on these unfolding events now, but instead will be focusing our efforts on supporting these most-affected individuals. Our teachers have been watching students carefully and mental health support is being offered. If you think your student needs extra support, please contact their teacher or an administrator.
Teachers and administrators are also in touch with families to accommodate urgent situations.
The needs of our students vary widely according to their age and their connections to this violence. I hope you will find the resources below useful. Be aware that graphic images and videos of the violence are prevalent online and in all news media right now, and that children may inadvertently be exposed to images that are terrifying and may be psychologically harmful. I strongly recommend that all parents/guardians watch over their children even more carefully now and in the coming weeks.
