Dear Albany Community,
Albany Unified is incredibly fortunate to have such a strong music program, and that’s thanks in large part to our community’s long-standing commitment to supporting the arts. With the Prop 28 funding for arts education, we have an exciting opportunity to further grow and strengthen these programs for our students. The Elementary Spring Choir Festival at Memorial Park was a wonderful celebration, with fantastic student performances in a fun, family-friendly setting. The 5th Grade Band and AMS Ensemble Concert also received glowing feedback.
Prop 28 Study Session
At Tuesday’s study session, the Board of Trustees received an update on the implementation of Proposition 28, which provides ongoing state funding to expand arts and music education in K–12 public schools. The district began planning back in 2023–24, using staff surveys and site-level input to guide initial efforts.
This year, students began receiving additional arts instruction funded by Prop 28. Details of what was provided at each school are available on this webpage in the presentation slides and financial statements. The Board reviewed the current Prop 28 budget: AUSD expects approximately $470,000 annually, with $592,795 projected to remain unallocated by the end of 2024–25. These unallocated funds resulted from late receipt of state funds and some operational issues related to proper expenditure. A clear, planned process will allow AUSD to expend those funds over the next several years. A key feature of Prop 28 funding is that at least 80% of funds must go toward staffing, with up to 20% for materials and supplies.
Planning continues as we work on next year’s budget, which incorporates Prop 28 funding. Next steps include finalizing staffing and program design, deepening community engagement, and aligning plans with each School Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) and the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) for the District. The bottom line is that these funds will allow students at all schools to receive significantly more arts instruction than previously possible.
Albany High Art Show
The annual Albany High School (AHS) Art Show will be on Wednesday, May 14, 4–7pm. All are welcome to come and see what these young artists have created! Work from all art classes will be displayed on the first floors of both the main AHS building and art building. Photos from the twenty students who won awards in the Bay Area Creative Youth Foundation contest (online contest gallery) will be shown. In addition to this one-day event, several students from Albany High art classes will have their work featured at the Abrams Claghorn Gallery (1251 Solano Ave.) That show will run for several weeks, with an opening reception on May 10, 3–6 pm.
