Dear Albany Community,
Albany Unified has been in the news recently due to the racial taunts directed at our high school baseball players during an April game against Pinole Valley High. I have been keeping you updated on this situation through separate messages and will continue to share any new developments. I mention it here because I want to reaffirm how deeply committed I am to standing against racism and all forms of hate. This commitment is central to who I am and will remain a guiding priority throughout my leadership in this district.
We have asked West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD) to fully investigate the incident and hold the students involved accountable for their behavior. It was reported to me that the hate speech was coming from the dugout during the game, which makes this all the more urgent to address. I also want to clarify that while AUSD is committed to ensuring accountability, we have no role in placing WCCUSD staff on leave or determining the consequences within their district. What we are focused on is creating a restorative process for all involved, and above all, ensuring the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and families. Our shared goal is to foster an inclusive, welcoming culture across our schools—one where every student feels a sense of belonging and safety. We know that when students feel safe and valued, they are best positioned to learn, grow, and thrive.
Diverse Learners Are Welcome
Inclusion in Albany Unified extends to every member of our community, including students and staff whose brains process and engage with the world in diverse and unique ways. We recognize that neurodiversity is a natural part of human variation, and we are committed to creating learning environments where all individuals are valued, supported, and given what they need to thrive. As the parent of neurodiverse children myself, I know firsthand the importance of creating learning environments where all students are supported and valued. Recent remarks from the federal administration about autism misrepresent the true complexities and strengths that come with neurodiversity. In our schools, we are committed to ensuring every student can access learning in a way that meets their needs and honors who they are. We affirm and support all students and see neurodiversity as a vital strength that enriches our classrooms and community.
Jewish Parent Engagement Group Event
AUSD’s Jewish Parent Engagement (JPE) group is hosting a Shabbat Celebration on May 30, 5:30–7:30pm at Ocean View Elementary to honor Jewish American Heritage Month and the end of the school year. All are invited for field games, food, and a dance party. JPE members are also sharing Jewish culture weekly before school at all campuses this month. In an effort to ensure that all school libraries had adequate books about Jewish culture, JPE submitted a list of carefully selected books to the District. As a direct result of this, not only have those books been purchased (see photo above) but I have extended the offer to all AUSD parent engagement groups to submit similar lists, so that our students have exposure to all the rich cultural heritages represented here in Albany. AHS Ultimate Frisbee Team Heads To Nationals
The AHS Ultimate team just won the Spaghetti Western, the largest competition for elite high school teams in the Western US, including teams from Colorado, Utah, Washington, Oregon, California, and even Mexico. They will now go on to be one of the 16 teams nationwide to compete in the High School Nationals Invitational competition this summer. Go Cougars!
Elementary Sci Oly Teams
For the first time ever, Albany elementary students participated at the Bay Area Regional Science Olympiad Division A tournament last weekend. It was the culmination of about two months of preparation, led by some dedicated parents and older AUSD students. Teams from all three elementary schools competed, with outstanding results. Cornell teams won first place in the solar system challenge, first and fourth place in the pasta tower, second place in the metric mastery challenge, and sixth place in the mousetrap car challenge. A Cornell team achieved the highest overall standing of the AUSD teams, coming in 8th place out of 58 teams. The Marin team took 5th place in both the mousetrap car and write it, do it challenges. An Ocean View team took 6th place in the write it, do it challenge. Congratulations to all of these students, who had a blast competing and learned a lot from the experience.
Community Service Awards
I’d also like to congratulate two Albany High students for their community service. Maya Mitchell Flores achieved a Merit Award with over 30 hours of community work. Evelyn Mulen Cano reached the Honor Award level with over 60 hours of volunteer service.

Evento del grupo de participación de padres judíos
El grupo de Participación de Padres Judíos (JPE) del AUSD organizará una Celebración de Shabat el 30 de mayo, de 5:30 p. m. a 7:30 p. m., en la Escuela Primaria Ocean View para celebrar el Mes de la Herencia Judía Estadounidense y el fin del año escolar. Todos están invitados a disfrutar de juegos de campo, comida y una fiesta de baile. Los miembros de JPE también compartirán información sobre la cultura judía semanalmente antes de clases en todos los campus este mes. Para garantizar que todas las bibliotecas escolares contaran con suficientes libros sobre cultura judía, JPE envió al Distrito una lista de libros cuidadosamente seleccionados. पहिलो पटक, अल्बानी प्राथमिक विद्यालयका विद्यार्थीहरूले गत सप्ताहन्तमा बे एरिया क्षेत्रीय विज्ञान ओलम्पियाड डिभिजन ए प्रतियोगितामा भाग लिए। यो केही समर्पित अभिभावकहरू र AUSD का पुराना विद्यार्थीहरूको नेतृत्वमा लगभग दुई महिनाको तयारीको परिणति थियो। तीनवटै प्राथमिक विद्यालयका टोलीहरूले उत्कृष्ट नतिजाका साथ प्रतिस्पर्धा गरे। कर्नेल टोलीहरूले सौर्य प्रणाली चुनौतीमा पहिलो स्थान, पास्ता टावरमा पहिलो र चौथो स्थान, मेट्रिक मास्टरी चुनौतीमा दोस्रो स्थान र माउसट्र्याप कार चुनौतीमा छैटौं स्थान जिते। कर्नेल टोलीले AUSD टोलीहरूको उच्चतम समग्र स्थिति हासिल गर्यो, ५८ टोलीहरूमध्ये ८ औं स्थानमा आयो। मारिन टोलीले माउसट्र्याप कार र लेख्नुहोस्, यो चुनौती दुवैमा पाँचौं स्थान हासिल गर्यो। ओशन भ्यू टोलीले लेख्नुहोस्, यो चुनौतीमा छैटौं स्थान हासिल गर्यो। यी सबै विद्यार्थीहरूलाई बधाई छ, जसले प्रतिस्पर्धामा धमाका मच्चाए र अनुभवबाट धेरै कुरा सिके।
सामुदायिक सेवा पुरस्कारहरू
म अल्बानी हाईका दुई विद्यार्थीहरूलाई उनीहरूको सामुदायिक सेवाको लागि बधाई दिन चाहन्छु। माया मिचेल फ्लोरेसले ३० घण्टाभन्दा बढी सामुदायिक कार्य गरेर मेरिट अवार्ड प्राप्त गरिन्। एभलिन मुलेन क्यानोले ६० घण्टाभन्दा बढी स्वयंसेवा गरेर सम्मान अवार्ड स्तरमा पुगिन्।

शिक्षा बोर्डको सबै बैठकका एजेन्डाहरू बैठक हुनुभन्दा अगाडि नै प्रकाशित हुन्छन्। माथिको लिङ्कमा वा AUSD कार्यक्रम क्यालेन्डर मार्फत एजेन्डाहरू पहुँच गर्नुहोस् ।
