Superintendent's Community Update, September 26, 2025

Dear Albany Community,
Thanks to the support of Proposition 28, which provides dedicated state funding for arts education, AUSD is bringing our Vision — every student empowered to realize their fullest potential — to life by expanding and enriching music opportunities across our schools.

Pictured above is music teacher Jeffrey Luna-Sparks with a new set of student ukuleles — one of the many ways our program is growing. Beginning this school year, each elementary school will now have a full-time general music teacher for grades TK–4: Jeffrey Luna-Sparks at Cornell, Marina Zubareva at Marin, and Emma Powell at Ocean View.

For 5th grade, we are introducing a rotation of specialized music educators, allowing all students to explore band, choir, and musical theater. In addition to Jeffrey, Marina, and Emma, this team includes Dr. Carlos Hernandez.

These investments reflect our mission to provide an excellent education that honors the unique ways students learn and creates inclusive, supportive, and collaborative environments. Expanding our music program ensures that every student has the chance to discover their voice, celebrate differences, and express their creativity.

Learning About Rosh Hashanah 

AUSD’s Jewish Parent Engagement Group (JPEG) is one of several Affinity groups working to create community and help the entire district better understand and appreciate the gifts of each culture. Earlier this week, JPEG members greeted students across the District with a Shana Tova U Metuka—“Sweet New Year”—in celebration of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.

 

All elementary schools, AMS, and AHS enjoyed a beautiful spread of apples and honey and learned about Jewish holiday symbols. I wish our Jewish community a Shana Tova and hope that this year will be filled with B'sorot Tovot—“Good News.” 

 

Website Upgrade

The District and all school websites are being revamped and upgraded. Our goal is to make calendars, forms, news, and all school information easier for everyone to access, especially on mobile devices. The new websites are expected to launch in the next few weeks. 

 

Celebración Latina and Read-Alouds 

Just a reminder, Celebración Latina is coming up on Saturday, October 4, 11am–2pm at Albany Middle School. All are invited to come and celebrate! This year, Familias Latinas is asking students and their families to perform a dance, sing a song, play instruments, read a poem, or share facts about their cultural traditions or country of origin during the first hour of the Celebración. Now more than ever, it is important for our community to come together to represent our rich culture. Another way Latino/a/x/e community members can participate is to read a book to an elementary school class that highlights Latino/x culture or characters. Sign up here to read aloud to a class during Hispanic Heritage Month.

Programa de Música Elemental, Tradiciones de Rosh Hashaná, Actualización de Sitio Web y ¡Celebración Latina!

 

Estimada comunidad de Albany:  
Gracias al apoyo de la Proposición 28, que proporciona fondos estatales específicos para la educación artística, AUSD está haciendo realidad nuestra Visión: cada estudiante capacitado para alcanzar su máximo potencial, al expandir y enriquecer las oportunidades musicales en nuestras escuelas.

En la foto de arriba, el profesor de música Jeffrey Luna-Sparks con un nuevo juego de ukeleles para estudiantes, una de las muchas maneras en que nuestro programa está creciendo. A partir de este año escolar, cada escuela primaria contará con un profesor de música general de tiempo completo para los grados TK-4: Jeffrey Luna-Sparks en Cornell, Marina Zubareva en Marin y Emma Powell en Ocean View.

Aprendiendo sobre Rosh Hashaná

El Grupo de Participación de Padres Judíos (JPEG) del AUSD es uno de varios grupos de afinidad que trabajan para crear comunidad y ayudar a todo el distrito a comprender y apreciar mejor los dones de cada cultura. A principios de esta semana, los miembros de JPEG saludaron a los estudiantes de todo el distrito con un Shana Tova U Metuka (Dulce Año Nuevo) para celebrar Rosh Hashaná, el Año Nuevo judío.

 

Todas las escuelas primarias, secundarias y preparatorias disfrutaron de una hermosa cena de manzanas con miel y aprendieron sobre los símbolos festivos judíos. Le deseo a nuestra comunidad judía un Shana Tová y espero que este año esté lleno de B'sorot Tovot , "Buenas Nuevas".

 

Actualización del sitio web

Los sitios web del Distrito y de todas las escuelas se están renovando y actualizando. Nuestro objetivo es facilitar el acceso a calendarios, formularios, noticias y toda la información escolar, especialmente en dispositivos móviles. Se espera que los nuevos sitios web se lancen en las próximas semanas.

 

Celebración Latina y Lectura en voz alta  

Les recordamos que la Celebración Latina se llevará a cabo el sábado 4 de octubre, de 11:00 a. m. a 2:00 p. m., en la Escuela Intermedia Albany. ¡Todos están invitados a celebrar! Este año, Familias Latinas invita a los estudiantes y sus familias a bailar, cantar, tocar instrumentos, leer un poema o compartir datos sobre sus tradiciones culturales o su país de origen durante la primera hora de la Celebración. Ahora más que nunca, es importante que nuestra comunidad se una para representar nuestra rica cultura. Otra forma en que los miembros de la comunidad latina/a/x/e pueden participar es leyendo un libro a una clase de primaria que destaque la cultura o personajes latinos/x. Inscríbanse aquí para leer en voz alta a una clase durante el Mes de la Herencia Hispana.

網站升級

學區和所有學校的網站正在進行改版升級。我們的目標是讓日曆、表格、新聞以及所有學校資訊更方便所有人訪問，尤其是在行動裝置上。新網站預計將在未來幾週內上線。

 

拉丁慶祝活動和朗讀 

溫馨提醒，拉丁裔慶典 (Celebración Latina) 將於 10 月 4 日星期六上午 11 點至下午 2 點在奧爾巴尼中學舉行。誠摯邀請大家前來共度歡樂時光！今年，拉丁裔家庭 (Familias Latinas) 將邀請學生及其家人在慶典的第一個小時內表演舞蹈、唱歌、演奏樂器、朗誦詩歌，或分享關於他們文化傳統或祖國的趣聞軼事。現在，我們的社區比以往任何時候都更需要團結起來，展現我們豐富的文化。拉丁裔/a/x/e 社區成員還可以參與其中，為小學班級朗讀一本以拉丁裔/x 文化或人物為主題的書籍。點擊此處報名，在西班牙裔傳統月期間為班級朗讀。

प्रिय अल्बानी समुदाय,  
कला शिक्षाको लागि समर्पित राज्य कोष प्रदान गर्ने प्रस्ताव २८ को समर्थनको लागि धन्यवाद, AUSD ले हाम्रा विद्यालयहरूमा संगीत अवसरहरू विस्तार र समृद्ध बनाएर हाम्रो दृष्टिकोण - प्रत्येक विद्यार्थीलाई आफ्नो पूर्ण क्षमता महसुस गर्न सशक्त - लाई जीवन्त बनाइरहेको छ।
