Moreover, transgender students in California have the right under state law to use restrooms and locker rooms that align with their gender identity. State law also expressly prohibits discrimination in schools on the basis of gender identity.

In addition, AUSD Board Policy 5145.3 clearly states that we prohibit, at any district school or school activity, the unlawful discrimination, harassment, intimidation, and bullying of any student, including our transgender students.

Therefore, as we await further guidance from the courts on this important interpretation of federal law, our community should know that we will protect and provide equal rights to our transgender students whether federal law requires us to do so or not.
