UPDATED Superintendent's Message: Elementary Enrollment Update May 2, 2017
AUSD Staff, Families, and Community,
Enrollment for Albany Unified School District has historically been stable. However, in the past two years, we have seen a decline in elementary enrollment of about 10%. There are several thoughts on the reasoning for this reduction, however, due to this uncertainty, we have to plan carefully.
We have worked diligently over the past few years to keep our class sizes as low as we can, especially for our youngest learners, and we will continue to do so. Because we are still in the enrollment process and will continue to enroll students throughout the summer, we will be monitoring the number of students enrolling and will adjust classes as necessary. In the fall when school starts, we will be able to determine final numbers of students who actually attend school. It is possible that class sizes will need to be adjusted based on these actual attendance numbers.
The discussion we had with our elementary principals was for staffing based on preliminary projected enrollment numbers. The question of final staffing or class size has not yet come to the School Board, but will be discussed over the coming months as part of the larger discussion on how to balance the budget.
Thank you.
Valerie Williams
